Being in Detention

When we all first went into lockdown, it seemed like a time where we would all come together through being apart and take care of each other, make sure we all stayed healthy. What actually happened is that it became more apparent about how divided we were and how our attempts to squash systemic racism were failing, miserably.

Detention 101 has many of these topics woven throughout it. On the surface, the film is a reimagining of the Breakfast Club with adults in detention, but in actuality it builds throughout moving from reflecting on economic classism to commenting on racial privilege. It is a slow build and you do need to stick around until the end for the full payoff, but it is a fun and entertaining ride to that point.

The film is densely packed with reflections on religion, health care rights, economics and racism.

It comments on its on characters with images, reflecting on the unconscious bias and internal hypocricy they all have.

I think a great film is a film that has many levels. I hope you enjoy the levels in this one and the humor…lots of humor.
